Dispatches from the front: Welcome to the Trench Crusade

I was going to begin this post by saying “I don’t really remember how I stumbled across Trench Crusade” but after dredging my memory for a week or so, that’s no longer true. Back at the tail end of 2022 I discovered the work of the sculptor James Sherriff (@brass0_0monkey on Instagram, go give him a follow) and purchased a pack of Power Armoured Female Warriors from him. Included in the parcel with these minis when they arrived was a wee card promoting the Tank Hunter Communicant Kickstarter which was for a collection of models sculpted by James which are based on artwork by Mike Franchina. The kickstarter had completely passed me by, but luckily for the tardy folks like me not only had it been fully funded, but they were accepting late backers as well, so I added a pledge for the minis I fancied and thought little more of it other than looking forward to painting up some cool minis when they arrived. Missives from Middle Earth #4 - 'There flowered a White Tree, and that was for Gondor..'

It's been a wee while since the last Works in Progress , mainly due to a very busy end to 2023 that included my wife's birthday, my 40th birthday, a trip to Edinburgh to see Wicked and of course the usual festivities at Christmas. Despite how busy it's been, I've continued chipping away at things although I didn't manage to get everything wrapped up by Hogmanay as I'd hoped, I have managed to finish some more minis. I've also managed to buy a few more as well, but more on that later. First things first though - finished minis. Anborn and Mablung were an absolute joy to paint up and fit in perfectly with the Rangers I painted earlier in 2023. They have a little more detail compared to the older sculpts, but as they're named characters, I'm OK with their wargear being a bit fancier than their rank and file comrades. Thoughts on... telling stories with details

I admit right off the bat that the miniature which inspired this post was released quite some time ago (9 months at the time of writing) so I'm probably waaaay behind the curve in sharing these thoughts in relation to this specific mini. But as the principles apply to any model and I've only just gotten around to building the mini in question, now seems as good a time as any to pontificate! Intended to inspire and motivate the soldiery of the Astra Militarum, the officers of the Commissariat are probably regarded with more fear and superstition than anything else. That is not to say that there haven’t been examples of those who haven't but cut from a different cloth, even going so far as to have forged genuine bonds with the men and women they have fought beside (such as Commissars Cain, Raine, Hark and Gaunt, for example) but for every one of these luminaries, there seem to many more who inspire more through fear anything else.
