While she built her Necron Warriors and an Adepta Sororitas Imagifier I had spare, I got stuck into assembling the Jade Obelisk warband that I received as part of my HoHoHobby Vices Secret Santa last month.
The miniatures are incredibly detailed and brimming with character but went together quickly and easily with very little difficulty making them a genuine pleasure to build - in fact I think I spent more time deciding on the wargear options than actually assembling them! I was particularly struck by how well the joins on most of the components are hidden or disguised by the way that they go together so that in a lot of cases you can't see them at all.
Since the majority of the fighters in the Warband are quite slow (which makes sense as they're heavily armoured and slowly turning to stone) I built all four Defacers with bows so they can harry targets at range while their brothers and sisters close in with their melee weapons.
I managed to get along to one of the local club nights last Friday and got a game with the Jade Obelisk and they can hit incredibly hard when they're set up right, but there's some nice depth to the synergy required to pull this off so I'm looking forward to giving them another go soon, possibly in a wee narrative campaign that we might run through the local Warhammer store.
The game I played with them had a few fantastic cinematic moments, though my favorite was when one of my opponent’s Chaos Legionnaires charged towards my Idolarc, attempting to bash it with his spiked shield. Stumbling at the last moment though, he barely grazed the daemonic creature inflicting only a single point of damage upon it. It was so enraged by the assault however, that it almost tore its' attacker apart with its riposte as I rolled three critical hits and dealt 9 damage in return!
Alongside this murderous band of iconoclasts, I also decided that I'd get my Kasrkin Kill Team assembled over the last few evenings as well on the basis that if they're built, I can try and get some games with them which will hopefully help to inspire me to paint them up.
Having built quite a few of the Cadian command and infantry and for the record, I love those kits - more on them soon, the Kasrkin were a little less labour intensive to assemble, generally having fewer components to clean up and put together. The detail and quality of the models is still fantastic though and they scale perfectly with their more lightly armed and armoured counterparts and have been sculpted in similar 'mid-action' poses.
The assembly guide does leaves a little to be desired however, as unfortunately it doesn't clearly show all of the options you can get out of the kit. I managed to get the operatives I wanted built in the end though, so this was only a minor issue overall and I'm sure the guide that comes with the 40k kit will go into the options in a bit more depth.
One thing I found which I think is worth mentioning if you're assembling some Kasrkin of your own at some point is that to get the masked heads to sit more naturally if you want them looking left or right, it's best to shave away a little of the mask behind the filter pack on the side you want them looking towards, otherwise it can clash with the collar of their jacket and force the neck and head into a slightly unhealthy/uncomfortable looking angle.
At some point this week I'm planning to get narrative rosters written up for both of these bands of hardened warriors so I can begin to chart their fortunes (and inevitably misfortunes) as I get games with them.
That's about it for this works in progress I think... except to start repeating I haven't ended up collecting a small force of Cadians, I haven't ended up collecting a small force of Cadians...
