Four, five, still alive - Ione and Coyl of The Exiled Dead

"...let there be no doubt. If we do not halt the spread of these abominations now, then there will be no respite. No flight nor refuge shall bring peace, for they shall not rest until they have dragged down every last one of us..."
Attrib. Arch-knight Havenos of Quuin

With Regulus, Bault and Vlash painted, it seemed only logical to give the rest of the warband the same treatment and as you can see, the final two Arcwalkers Ione and Coyl have just shuffled off of my painting desk to join their undead fellows.

Before moving on to the main event, here's a quick snap of Ione and Coyl's bases. The flagstones are painted up to match the other characters in the warband, but Ione's base features a cheeky rat while Coyl's has a rusting shackle.

The rat was painted up quite quickly, starting from an Abaddon Black basecoat and then layering its' fur with first Eshin Grey, followed by Mechanicus Standard Grey. From there I applied highlights with Dawnstone and a little Administratum Grey before using a glaze of Nuln Oil to tie everything together.

The pink nose, snout and tail started out with a couple of layers of Bugman's Glow which I shaded with Carroberg Crimson. I then highlighted them back up with Bugman's Glow followed by Cadian Fleshtone and some extreme highlights of Kislev Flesh

The rusted shackle was even quicker as it was just a case of basecoating it with Iron Warriors before shading it with Agrax Earthshade and then Nuln Oil. Once the shades were fully dried and the metal was look nice and dirtied down, I used some thinned Skrag Brown to paint the patches of rust on the chain links and shackle and then applied some rough highlights of Ironbreaker to finish up.

Coyl is probably my second favourite sculpt in the warband - what's not to love about a zombie with a transplanted Orruk arm? The undead green skin started out with a base of Ionrach Skin which I shaded with Poxwalker. I then used successive glazes of Druchii Violet to create the bruising at the shoulder as well as where the bolts have been screwed in to the arm and where the clamp around the wrist would chafe at the skin. Once I was happy with that I layered the flesh up with Ionrach Skin followed by Deepkin Flesh

The muscle fibres visible through the torn skin were painted with Gal Vorbak Red and shaded with Carroberg Crimson before being highlighted with Word Bearers Red and then Bugman's Glow

To finish up Coyl's adopted arm, I reapplied some Druchii Violet around the surgical staples at the top as well as around the elbow, wrist and knuckles to bring a little colour back into them and provide a bit of contrast to all of the green.

Speaking of surgical staples, they were rusted up a bit in the same manner as the shackle on Coyl's base as I don't imagine Deintalos would be particularly fussed about keeping them clean.

After painting so much skin on the other Deadwalkers, Ione's clothes made for a rather welcome change!

The dirty black fabric of her blouse started out with a basecoat of Abaddon Black after which the folds and edges of the collar and cuff were highlighted with Eshin Grey. These initial highlights were refined with Dawnstone and some pin highlights of Administratum Grey.

Her dress was painted to look similar to Vlash's trousers. Beginning with a basecoat of Mournfang Brown which was shaded with Agrax Earth. From there the fabric was layered back up with Mournfang Brown before being highlighted with Skrag Brown and then Deathclaw Brown

I hadn't clocked it before I started painting her, but Ione is actually missing both of her eyes - her left eye soket is obviously empty but her right eye is absent as well. Nevertheless, I carefully popped a wee drop of White Scar into the right eye socket before painting over it with Nihilakh Oxide to hint at the Force Dynamic within.

The mechanism on Ione's back presented a fun opportunity to play with corrosion in a similar fashion to the face of Regulus' shield and I used Sotek Green thinned to about the consistency of milk for the first layers of verdigris before going back and sparingly using Nihilakh Oxide in some of the nooks and crannies of the device and to paint the streaks across the cylinder in the centre.

The rusty shiv was painted in a similar fashion to the shackle on Coyl's base, but the Skrag Brown was applied with successive glazes to keep it a bit more under control and allow me to concentrate it exactly where I wanted it. I kept the metallic highlights on the blade much more sparing than I might normally do to suggest that it's been corroding away for quite some time.

With Ione and Coyl now joining the other members of The Exiled Dead that are complete, all that remains is to paint up Deintalos and Prentice Markov to finish things up. I'll be taking the same approach to them as I did with their minions, so hope to be sharing some photos of the pair of them as well as of the finished warband soon. Until then though, as always - thanks for reading and happy hobbying.
