Guardian of the Master Rune - Maleneth Witchblade

"...if there is one thing my devotion has taught me, it is that all beings die. Even gods..."

Searching for some hobby inspiration last week, I found myself 'thumbing through' some e-books on my Kindle, ultimately settling on the e-short A Point of Pride. I shan't spoil the story, but it features Maleneth Witchblade, companion of the best (or worst) duardin slayer of all time Gotrek Gurnisson.

Not only did I enjoy the quick read (and resolve to dig out the couple of other shorts I have starring Gotrek and Maleneth) it also gave me the inspiration I was looking for and I've spend the last week or so painting up the commemorative series miniature that was released back in February as part of this year's Black Library celebration.

I decided to to paint Maleneth up in a similar fashion to the box art of the mini, but threw in the dark tan leather straps and belt featured on the cover of 'A Point of Pride' to broaden the colour palette a touch and add a little more visual interest overall.

While I'm talking about the box, it's brilliant to see Games Workshop rolling out more releases that aren't in plastic trays within oversized boxes wrapped in cellophane, with Maleneth being the latest 'single small sprue' mini to be released in smaller, completely cardboard packaging (the recent Hobgrot Slittaboss, along with the commemorative series models Biosigns Terminated, First of the FaithfulEstenna of Brighthall and Clawlord Kettek Throatbite being the others).

I'm sure there's an element of cost reduction at play behind this decision, but reducing the amount of single use plastic in circulation is no bad thing.

One of the great aspects of Maleneth's mini is how the sculptor has balanced ensuring it's characterful and dynamically posed, but isn't overcomplicated with heaps of details, making her quite easy to paint up,  especially with a restricted colour palette.

A Point of Pride featuring Skaven antagonists has also given me some inspiration for my next project with one of the warpstone addled engineers of Clan Skryre tunnelling its' way onto my painting desk last night and I might also dig out the couple of other Gotrek and Maleneth short stories I have as well.

Until next time, thanks for reading and happy hobbying.
