Thoughts On: Tangential Contrivances Year One and plans for next year

And just like that, another year has almost passed. I don't know about you, but it feels as though 2022 has absolutely flown by!

As the first full year of Tangential Contrivances comes to a close, I thought I'd reflect a little on the last 12 months and how the blog has changed slightly since its inception as well as look forward to some of what I'd like to work on in 2023.

I set the blog up as a space where I could go into more detail on projects I was working on because as great as social media is, its not really conducive to longform discussion and that was something I'd found I had been missing from my hobby experience. I also wanted to try and focus more upon sharing completed projects rather than work in progress posts, though that hasn't always been possible as I'm not the speediest of painters and hobby time can be quite tight at times. In both of these regards, I think the blog is serving its purpose well and I plan to try and keep using it much as I have been.

Speaking of speed though, much as I've enjoyed them over the last few months, I think the Miniature of the Month Masterclasses might take a bit of a back seat going into 2023. Unfortunately they can take quite a chunk of time to do and as I mentioned, hobby time can be hard to come by at times. That isn't to say that they're going to disappear completely, indeed there's one more to come before the end of the year, but I may do them a bit less frequently going forward depending on which miniatures we see appearing.

That said, some of the things I do plan to work on next year include:

Soulblight Gravelords

I've built up quite a collection of Soulblight since I shared The Court of Lady Muirmæl. While I'm reluctant to say it'll definitely happen because I know exactly how much of a hobby butterfly I am, I plan on trying to paint them up for "New Year, New Army" and/or "Armies on Parade".

In a bid to have a full unit of Deathrattle Skeletons ready to get stuck into, I spent an evening this week building another 5 to add to those Lady Muirmæl already has. I may also grab some more Direwolves as well to fulfill the Battleline requirements for the army, but we'll see how things go!

Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game: Minas Tirith Force

Inspired by the Warrior of Minas Tirith I painted up a couple of months back, I decided to go a step further and paint up a few more to form a Battle Company:

Since then, I've also picked up Faramir, Damrod and Madril from the Battle for Osgiliath set, so I decided I'd paint up a few more Warriors of Minas Tirith for them to lead I've swapped the sword of one the Warriors for a spear to help avoid having duplicate poses and give me an equal number of spears and swords overall.

If I can add a couple of Rangers to the mix as well then I should have a nice round
250pt army to try out some time.

Astra Militarum 'Patrol'

Although I didn't grab the army set, there were a few of the Cadian sculpts from the Command Squad and Shock Troop kits that I liked the look of so I've picked up a handful purely with the aim of painting them at some point. At this stage, I've just built those in the picture above but there are a couple more inbound in the mail that I'll add to this band when they arrive. I've no idea on a colour scheme for the uniform yet, but I'm sure something will come to mind eventually!

Other Projects

Warcry Jade Obelisk Warband - I played my first game of Warcry in November using the Corvus Cabal and it was tremendously good fun. The fast, furious and highly cinematic feeling gameplay was definitely appealing enough to want to keep playing and then the Jabe Obelisk were previewed. I'm hoping to get my set built early in the new year as a few of us have been talking about playing a narrative campaign at our local Warhammer store.

Warhammer: Underworlds Warbands - I've a fair few of these to build and paint now and I want to get back to them as they're brilliant self contained projects that give lovely wee taste of the various factions abroad in the Mortal Realms. I'm particularly enamoured of Grinkrak's Looncourt, The Sons of Velmorn and Hexbane's Hunters.

Kasrkin Kill Team - when Kill Team: Shadowvaults was released, I snapped up a squad of Kasrkin and their rules as the miniatures looked absolutely fantastic. Kill Team is another game that I think will help scratch my skirmish itch and I built a Phobos Strike Team earlier in the year, but leading an band of elite mortal troops feels like it might be a bit easier to build a narrative around.

The War of the False Primarch - I've a few bits to finish up working on in Sector Heliopolis, including some miniatures, a character bio and a short story. I had hoped to get them all done over the last few months but while I've managed to make some progress writing, it has unfortunately fallen a little too much by the wayside.

I'm not tying myself particularly hard to any of these projects because I find it better to work on what I feel like than to try and force it, plus I'm sure there'll be plenty of other things that will take my fancy over the next year or so (in fact as I started writing this post, GW previewed the Gloomspite Gitz Squigboss which definitely piqued my interest!) but I'm hoping that 2023 will be a good hobby year.

I'd just like to close out by thanking everyone who's taken the time to read my hobby related ramblings in all their forms over the last 12 months - I hope you have a lovely Christmas break and wish you all the best for the New Year.
